What Window Security Film Can and Cannot Do

By May 15, 2024August 6th, 2024Uncategorized

Window security film is a thin layer of transparent or translucent material applied to glazing to increase its performance and prevent dangerous shattering. This product is a more powerful security measure than many people realize. However, window security film has its limitations, so it’s important to understand what you can count on this product to deliver and what’s beyond its capabilities.

1. Ballistics Safety

Security window film …

Can’t stop bullets.

Can keep glass contained.

One of the most dangerous myths about window security film is that it’s bulletproof. While security window film can strengthen glass and make it more resistant to impacts, it cannot make it bulletproof; high-powered firearms can still penetrate the glass. If a window film vendor suggests their product is bulletproof, it is a red flag that should steer you away from that vendor.

If a vendor makes claims that seem farfetched, ask them:

  • What type of glass was their product tested with? For example, performance on 1/2″ annealed glass won’t reflect performance on 1/4″ tempered glass.
  • Do they stack films on top of each other? This action is not recommended and will void the manufacturer’s warranty.
  • What type of weapon did they use in product testing? Even if the film was able to stop one or two weapon types in testing, this is no guarantee it will be able to stop all weapon types.
  • Ballistic glass is the only real solution for making windows bullet resistantf. This product fully replaces your existing glass rather than adding to it.

While security film is not bulletproof, it does offer some benefits in the event of a shooting. Security window film is designed to stretch and hold glass together even when penetrated. That means it can hold shattered glass together upon impact, minimizing the risk of damage and injuries from flying glass shards.

2. Break-In Deterrence

Security window film …

Can’t prevent forced entry entirely.

Can delay and deter break-ins.

Next-generation window films boast impressive levels of strength. However, determined criminals with the right tools and sufficient time can still breach a window that’s been equipped with security film.

Window film acts as a deterrent to burglars by making it more difficult to break through windows. If an intruder shatters the glass, window film holds the broken pieces together, making it harder for them to gain access. This is enough to cause some rioters or burglars to give up quickly and move on.

Even if they continue to break through the glass, the added layer of security delays them, buying valuable time for building occupants to call authorities and take steps needed to stay safe.

3. Supplementary Security Measure

Security window film …

Is not a cure-all.

IS a valuable security enhancement.

It’s important to understand that window security film is a supplementary measure to add to intact glazing and is not intended to act as a bandage. If a window frame or structure is already compromised, simply applying security film won’t address the underlying structural weaknesses. Proper maintenance and repairs are necessary to ensure the integrity of the entire window system.

Even when applied properly, security window film shouldn’t be a building’s one-and-only security solution. It’s one critical component in a comprehensive approach to securing your building to keep your people and your property safe.

When combined with other security measures, window film can provide a major security upgrade to your building. In addition to deterring and delaying break-ins and containing shattered glass, some types of security film also offer privacy benefits by making it difficult for outsiders to see into the building during the day.
