1. Social Unrest 

Over the past year, we’ve seen the damage that social unrest can do to communities and businesses alike. Between the dates of May 25 and November 18, 2020, protests transpired in over 4,446 cities globally. Protests and riots can happen suddenly, and you must be proactive and prepared. Most businesses and storefronts composed of glass create a massive vulnerability for theft, rioters, and vandalism. Though glass makes everything visually more appealing, it’s the weakest link in building envelope security.

2. School Safety 

According to the K-12 School Shooting Database, from the year 2000 to today, there have been 1,686 shootings, 593 fatalities, and 1,611 injuries on school grounds. The increase in tragedies on school campuses is what’s known as the “Columbine Effect” – a terrifying change in mass violence and the use of guns in schools. 

If an active shooter can quickly shoot out a glass door or window and enter the building (as was the case with the Sandy Hook perpetrator), the students and staff have little to no time to react and get to a safe location. This situation also leaves minimal time for first responders to arrive on the scene. 

3. Natural Disasters 

Climate change is a growing problem that brings on building safety and security concerns. One of the most significant issues is that storms and weather conditions brought on by climate change are getting bigger and more extreme. According to the July 2021 Global Climate Summary, the global surface temperature reached 1.67°F (0.93°C) above the average temp of 60.4°F (15.8°C), which was the highest recorded temperature for July in 142 years. Yikes. 

Of course, the more concerning statistic is not a rise in temperature but their effect on natural disasters. The Institute for Economics and Peace reported an increase in natural disasters from 1900-2019. For example, there were only 39 incidents reported in 1960 but 396 reported in 2019. That is an increase of natural disasters times ten.
